Concrete Contractor Star ID - Patios, Driveways, Approaches & Shop Floors

Nampa Concrete Works pours patios, driveways, walkways, RV pads and shop floors for homeowners in Star, plus flatwork for local businesses. Star is about 7 miles north of Nampa in a straight line, and it sits in two counties at once, which changes who you call about the street in front of your house.

One City, Two Counties

Star is in northwestern Ada County, with parts stretching into Canyon County. Its schools are split between the Middleton School District and the West Ada School District, and the City's online permit portal keeps separate residential plan-check coversheets for the Ada County and Canyon County sides of town. Star grew from 5,793 residents in 2010 to 11,117 in 2020, so a large share of homes are recent builds with first-generation driveways and patios.

Who Owns the Street in Front of Your House

This is the part that surprises people. On the Ada County side of Star, public roads and right-of-way fall under the Ada County Highway District (ACHD). On the Canyon County side, the official map of Canyon Highway District No. 4 states that the City of Star doesn't have a functioning street department and that all public rights-of-way within the city and within Canyon County are under the Highway District's jurisdiction. So a new or widened driveway approach in Star goes to ACHD or to Highway District No. 4 depending on which side of the county line the lot sits. We confirm which one before quoting driveway approaches.

Star Building Permits and Concrete

The City of Star's building FAQ is unusually clear about concrete: no building permit is required for a concrete slab of any size. Permits are required for:

  1. Sheds or outbuildings 200 square feet or larger.
  2. Patio covers, pergolas and awnings that are attached (any size) or detached and larger than 200 square feet.
  3. Retaining walls over 4 feet from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall.
  4. Decks 30 inches or more above grade.

Agricultural buildings as defined by the building code don't need a building permit in Star but still have to meet zoning setbacks. Star's zoning code also requires a grading permit before ground disturbance over 500 cubic yards, with erosion and sediment control plans by a certified plan designer, a threshold a large shop pad or acreage driveway can reach.

Concrete Work We Do in Star

  2. Driveway replacements, extensions and RV pads.
  3. Shop and outbuilding slabs, with the patio cover or building permitted separately where Star requires it.
  4. Walkways, steps and small pads for hot tubs and equipment.
  5. Commercial flatwork in and around downtown Star.

Weather and Ground in Star

Star sits at about 2,470 feet, on the same freeze-thaw pattern as the rest of the Treasure Valley, so exterior slabs get air-entrained concrete, slope away from the house, and planned joints. Many soils on the valley's terraces drain slowly over a cemented layer, so we look closely at drainage and downspouts around any new slab.
