Concrete Contractor Kuna ID - Driveways, Patios, RV Pads & Shop Slabs

Nampa Concrete Works pours driveways, patios, RV pads, shop slabs and walkways for homeowners in Kuna, and flatwork for local businesses. Kuna is about 11 miles from Nampa as the crow flies, and its ground and its permit rules are different enough that they shape how we quote a job there.

Building on Kuna Ground

Parts of Kuna sit on shallow soil over basalt and cemented hardpan. The City of Kuna's 2019 Bedrock Depth map sorts the city and its impact area into depth-to-bedrock zones of 10 to 20 inches, 20 to 40 inches, 40 to 60 inches, and more than 60 inches. Where rock or hardpan is close to the surface, digging out for a gravel base, a footing or a post can hit a layer that a shovel or a small excavator won't move.

The USDA's description of the Sebree soil series, typical of terraces and basalt plains in southwest Idaho, notes an indurated, silica- and lime-cemented hardpan and slow permeability above it. In practice that means two things for concrete: excavation can take heavier equipment than expected, and water drains slowly through the soil under a slab. We probe the site at the walk-through, and if the quote assumes a certain excavation depth, it says so.

Permits in Kuna

The City of Kuna's residential building information lists the work that needs a permit, including:

  1. Garages and other accessory structures (detached storage buildings under 200 square feet are exempt).
  2. Any structure attached to the house, such as a covered patio.
  3. Retaining walls over 4 feet, including the footing.
  4. Decks more than 30 inches above grade.

A flat driveway, patio or RV pad isn't on that list. The street is a different matter: in Kuna, public roads and right-of-way are under the Ada County Highway District (ACHD), not the City. A new or widened driveway approach starts with an ACHD Driveway Approach Request, which ACHD's checklist says takes about a week and doesn't by itself authorize construction. Work in the right-of-way then needs an ACHD permit, and Kuna's own engineering notes require that permit at least 24 hours before construction.

Around Kuna

Kuna began as a railroad stop with a coach line to Boise, and the tracks still run through town. Indian Creek, a seasonal creek now carrying irrigation water from the New York Canal, runs through the city, and the Kuna Caves lava tube lies to the south. The Morley Nelson Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area, home to North America's densest population of nesting raptors, gives the town its yearly Snake River Birds of Prey Festival. Kuna had 24,011 residents at the 2020 Census after nearly tripling between 2000 and 2010, so many neighborhoods have driveways and patios that were poured in the same building boom and are reaching repair age together.
